Classified as a National Monument, this castle was born together with the city of Pombal.
It was built between 1156 and 1171 to defend the city of Coimbra, after it was conquered by Fernando Magno in 1064. This castle has Templar characteristics, which are present in other castles such as Almourol, Idanha, Monsanto, Tomar and Zêzere.
In recent years the Castle has undergone enhancement and requalification works that promote the space among residents and tourists.
